In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
