One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
