The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
