Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
